Hebrews 13:5, 6 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"
I remember a story regarding my grandfather. I was told that as he was a young man, he would say that one was never without what he needed so long as he kept a dime in his pocket. With it he could make a phone call if he needed help. He worked hard and became a very successful businessman. And it turned out that many others called on him for help which he gladly offered. This was only realized after his death as notes of gratitude were found which those had written him. He didn't do what he did for show. He was a very caring man who made a difference in a lot of lives. I don't say this to brag or boast, but I am grateful for that heritage.
I myself don't have a lot of monetary wealth to share but I have discovered an even greater wealth than that of money. Greater by far than a dime in our pocket--which certainly doesn't carry the same weight it did years ago--is a knowing in our hearts of the promise of God shared in our scripture today as the writer of Hebrews reminds us of God's word to us, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." This word is a quote from the book of Deuteronomy where Moses is about to pass the baton of leadership to Joshua as the Israelites are poised to enter the Promised Land. Moses says to him, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6)." And God spoke that same word to David, quoted in the Psalms and again here in Hebrews 13:6, The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? The LORD is with me; he is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies (Psalm 118:6, 7--And I would encourage you to read that whole Psalm!). This is a golden nugget. Carry it in the pocket of your heart. You are wealthy indeed!
