John 13:7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." The time was getting closer now to that fateful day. Jesus had told His disciples what would happen but they just didn't understand. And now He gathered them together one last time. Here He was, the Master, the Teacher, the Messiah---and He was the One who put the towel around His waist, got the basin, and began to wash His disciples' feet. He modeled for them a different kind of leadership, servant leadership, one who was willing to . . . .give His life for those He served. And were they worthy of such a Master? One of them was already plotting His betrayal. Jesus knew it. And yet He offered even him the bread and the wine. As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. He ate it in deceit.
"What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him, but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
And then there was another that Jesus knew would deny Him and even told him so. This one had made such bold claims, had such good intentions. Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." Not today, buddy, but another day.
Jesus knew they didn't understand. It didn't deter Him one bit from His course. He continued on. And He even made them a great promise, one His Father had given Him. Even this they didn't understand, but they would. That was the whole point. What they couldn't do, didn't know, didn't understand, Jesus would do for them and His Spirit would totally change everything for them. "All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. . . . I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth."
. . . "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4, 5)."
Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. Let me yield my life to the One who shows me the way.
