Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.
And so the first blessing, the single most overarching blessing is that we are restored to relationship with the Father through the Son, Jesus Christ. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers (Romans 8:29). Galatians gives further testimony to our new relationship (4:4-7): But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.
And so we are made to realize that as sons (and daughters) of God, we are also heirs with Jesus Christ, the Son, of all spiritual blessings in heavenly places. All spiritual blessings seem to denote not only the magnitude of the blessings themselves but of the depth and richness of their make-up. In the Garden, the serpent tried to imply to Eve that God was withholding something from her. Here there is an indication that nothing is being withheld! All spiritual blessings! The Interpreter's Bible gives this commentary concerning spiritual blessings: "They are called spiritual, not as given by the Spirit or experienced in the human spirit (though these thoughts are not excluded), but as belonging in their essential character to the realm of the imperishable, the eternal, the divine. Temporal blessings also come from God and call forth our grateful thanks; but his supreme gifts are spiritual and promote the highest aspects of our inward life. Blessing is here used concretely of the gifts by which God manifests his gracious goodness to us." I see the spiritual blessings as going beyond what is seen into the very essence of it; we see the tip of the iceberg with our natural eyes but there is a far greater existence below the surface, or perhaps above the surface in this case. The place of the foundation of these blessings is in heavenly places, from God the Father, the Source itself. All proceeds from Him. Paul encourages us in 2 Corinthians 4:18, So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. Jesus teaches us to invest in our true treasure (Matthew 6:19-21), "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." And in the Spirit, we are instructed by Jesus to lay hold of this treasure as we pray to our Father, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. And so heaven meets earth in Christ. Our earth is not cast aside but it is transformed.
Watch today for the intersections of heaven and earth. Blessings!
